UNWALKING THE WEST FILM FESTIVAL
November 4, 2017, 7-9pm
Hollywood Theater, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland
Join Signal Fire and One Flaming Arrow for an evening of “Unwalking the West Film Festival” at the historic Hollywood Theater. We’re following up our 2016 trips “unwalking” the paths of colonial expansion in the American West with a night of films featuring Through the Repellent Fence by Sam Wainwright Douglas, the new documentary about an important temporary land art installation by collective Postcommodity. The film will be opened by a series of short films by Nanda D’Agostino, Ryan Jeffery, Vanessa Renwick, and Sky Hopinka’s new film “Dislocation Blues” by Sky Hopinka, reflecting on visits to Standing Rock. See you there!
$10 Door. 2 hour film screening with 30 minute Q + A with filmmakers after the screening.
Through the Repellent Fence follows art collective Postcommodity as they strive to construct Repellent Fence, a two-mile long outdoor artwork that straddles the U.S.-Mexico border. Postcommodity consists of three Native American artists who “put land art in a tribal context.” Aided by the communities on both sides of the border in 2015 the artists installed a series of 28 huge inflatable spheres emblazoned with an insignia known as the “open eye” that has existed in Indigenous cultures from South America to Canada for thousands of years.
