Artists are still in tents! Our flagship residency enters its seventh year with two sessions for four artists and a special week dedicated to supporting a creative collaboration. This year Outpost takes place in the Oregon Cascades in August, a time of sun, sudden storms, and nightly meteor showers. The Cascades boast some of our best known and most visited public lands. They also continue to be heavily logged and remain at threat from off-road vehicle abuse, mining, and energy development.

Artists are provided with food, maps, and a magnificent 12x12 canvas wall tent for work and sleep space. The tents are equipped with a desk, cot, and rug for a comfortable camping experience, as well as kitchen utensils and food for self-prepared breakfast and lunch. Each tent is set apart from the others, but within a short walk to a base camp. Signal Fire organizers are stationed at the base camp, available for emergency and unforeseen needs. The group gathers for dinner each evening, served by Signal Fire at base camp.

Although we strive to create a comfortable experience, the nature of the project means artists should be prepared for unpredictable weather and camping conditions. There are no bathrooms or running water, but we do provide a pair of deep cycle batteries for charging cameras, laptops, etc. Aside from registered service animals, no pets are permitted. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Portland, Oregon. Signal Fire can assist in support of grant applications or visas, and we encourage international applications.

Maybe what the band needs most is some time alone...together. We are initiating a special third week of Outpost to support a collaborative group of any artistic discipline: dance troupes, visual art collectives, anyone that works together or wants to.

Signal Fire has four large wall tents so, although we can be flexible about the size of group we can serve, please take that into mind when considering personal space. Collaborators should submit a single application for this program, unique from any other trips you are applying to.
