In the winter of 2011-2012, Signal Fire hosted the Winter Wren Residency in La
Grande, Oregon. Participants: Jillian Vento Julie Perini Kerri Rosenstein Wayne Bund Guillaume Légaré Nicole Breedon and Kiera Brew Kurec Rebecca Najdowski La Grande is a small town in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, in the far corner of northeast Oregon. It sits in the valley of the Grande Ronde River, surrounded by some of the West’s most stunning and remote landscapes, including Eagle Cap Wilderness, the Elkhorn Mountains, Zumwalt Prairie, and Hell’s Canyon. The area is the ancestral home of the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Walla Walla, and Cayuse tribes, and has a vibrant and contentious history shaped by settlement, gold mining, logging, farming, and still-legendary fishing. Nearby wild areas currently host the reintroduction of Gray wolves and provide habitat to black bear, cougar, wolverine, and an astounding variety of birds. We are particularly seeking artists who would like to make work in response to the natural or cultural landscapes of this compelling region. | La Grande at sunrise, photographed by resident Julie Perini.
